Who claims the income tax exemption for the kids? How much will child support be? These issues, and other decisions, may be decided between you, with the help of a mediator. Then you can take that agreement to an attorney (who is not the mediator) who can prepare and file all of the necessary court and legal documents. The participants usually share the cost of the mediator, and sometimes even the attorney fees (for the lawyer preparing and filing the documents). The total cost will likely be much less than a traditional, contested divorce.
